Legal Aspects

Fossils have been prized since the dawn of civilization. Historical records show that amber, for example, was used in jewelry and household decorations. Furniture was even made out of it. The more valuable pieces had insects inside.

As more was learned about the origins of fossils, they began to be appreciated for their significance, as well as for their beauty, by scientists, museums, and private collectors and admirers.

Laws governing the fossil trade began to appear . Many of these have recognized fossils' socio-economic value and the benefits of rational, conscientious mining allied with scientific research, and have protected unique or scientifically important specimens. These laws have paved the way for important discoveries in many countries.

In southern Brazil in the last century, petrified wood was used for staircases, residential foundations, flooring and even fences. Fossil mining in Brazil has been cared out in a entirely illegal way, and some times in environmental preservation areas , such as the Araripe Highlands in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and in a number of sedimentary basins in the states of Sao Paulo, Goias, Maranhao, Tocantins, etc.

This illegal trade has not benefited the country. It has also destroyed or led to the export of paleontologically important fossils. Researchers are attempting to reverse this situation by introducing mining that is rational, economic-socially fair and ecologically correct.

Before the researchs acquired the petrified wood mining permits, there was never any interest on the part of citizens or companies in mining this or any other fossil legally.

All the mineral produced by the miners and offered by the company to the public has been mined in accordance with current mining and environmental legislation.

Our proven reserves allow us to sign agreements to provide an uninterrupted and varied supply of petrified wood to our clients.
